Hvidovre IF was once a top club in Danish football. In 17 seasons from 1965 to 1985, the club played in the top Danish football league, and during that period, it won three championships and a cup title. But in the last 40 years, there has not been much to celebrate for Hvidovre IF. The last big moment was in August 2013, when local rivals from Brøndby visited, and Hvidovre sent shockwaves through all of Vestegnen and eliminated the blue-yellow favorites from the tournament. Morten Bruun, who himself played top football and was part of the Danish national team that won the European Championship in Sweden in 1992, has written a book about Danish football, where Hvidovre IF is one of the most interesting chapters. He tells about the club's greatness and how the players lost their hunger after winning the championship and cup final. And it was not just the players who became complacent, but also the club as a whole. Hvidovre IF was a big club, but it's not today. So it's right when Peter Lassen says that there were 7,000 spectators in the stadium, and 6,000 of them probably supported Brøndby, which has overshadowed Hvidovre in all parameters. But Hvidovre IF still has a great history and a loyal fan base that hopes the club will one day return to the top.
